Purification Heritage Center
In 2014, the Friends of Purification Church initiated a campaign to save the Church of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary from inevitable ruin. The church was slowly falling apart, closed to masses due to its deteriorating condition. While there remains more to do, the church has been saved. Recognizing the rich history of the church and the surrounding area, the vision and mission of Friends of Purification Church evolved leading to the creation of
Purification Heritage Center
A Sacred Place to Seek, Find and Renew Faith
Purification Heritage Center encompasses the church, Locust Grove Cemetery and the land where the Locust Grove community once thrived. The mission of Purification Heritage Center is to preserve the history of Catholicism in Georgia while creating a sacred place where Catholics can come to deepen their faith through retreats, educational programs and service projects.
From 1790 on, The Church of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary was a fully functioning parish. It was a Catholic church long before the majestic cathedrals in Savannah and Atlanta were built. It is the precursor of the many churches in the dioceses of Savannah and Atlanta that now serve some 1,200,000 Catholics.
